Should I Repair or Replace My AC?
How Central Florida homeowners decide between repairing and replacing an AC: system age, repair cost vs. value, refrigerant type, and efficiency.
Short answer: Repair a system under about ten years old when the repair costs less than a third of replacement. Replace an older unit, one on R-22 refrigerant, or one facing a compressor or coil failure.
The quick rule most Central Florida homes can use
Compare the repair quote to the system's age. A repair under a third of the cost of a new system, on a unit less than about ten years old, is usually worth doing. Once a unit passes ten to twelve years, sits on discontinued R-22 refrigerant, or needs a compressor or coil, replacement is often the better long-term call — but only after the numbers are on the table, not on pressure.
What actually pushes a Florida AC toward replacement
- Age. Central Florida runs a cooling system nearly year-round, so a Florida AC ages faster than the same unit up north. Ten years here is not fifteen there.
- Refrigerant. Systems built before 2010 often use R-22, which is no longer produced. A leak on an R-22 system gets expensive fast, and that money is spent on obsolete equipment.
- The failing part. A capacitor or contactor is a cheap repair. A compressor, evaporator coil, or condenser coil is a large fraction of a new system's cost — the decision point.
- Rising bills and uneven comfort. A system that runs constantly, never quite dehumidifies, or leaves rooms warm is telling you its efficiency has dropped.
Why a second opinion matters here
The single most expensive mistake we see is a homeowner replacing a system that a warranty would have covered, or that a smaller repair would have fixed. Before you approve a several-thousand-dollar replacement, it is worth having a second licensed contractor confirm the diagnosis and check the manufacturer warranty status. We do that as a free second opinion — we confirm what actually failed, tell you whether it is covered, and lay out repair and replacement with real pricing so the choice is yours.
When replacement is genuinely the smart money
If the compressor is gone on a twelve-year-old R-22 system, a repair buys a year or two on equipment that is already obsolete, while a new, properly sized system cuts runtime and humidity for the next fifteen. In that case a free replacement estimate with a Manual J load calculation is the honest next step.
