Is My AC Still Under Warranty?
How to check whether your AC is still under manufacturer warranty, why part-vs-labor coverage matters, and how a second opinion protects you.
Short answer: Most AC manufacturers cover parts for five to ten years, often ten if the system was registered near installation. Labor is separate and shorter. Check the serial number against the manufacturer's records before paying for a covered part.
What manufacturer warranties usually cover
Most major AC brands provide a parts warranty of five to ten years — commonly ten years when the original owner registered the system within about 90 days of installation, and five if it was never registered. That warranty covers the parts, such as a compressor or coil. The labor to install the part is usually a separate, shorter warranty from the installing contractor. Knowing which is which is exactly where homeowners lose money.
How to check your status
- Find the model and serial number on the data plate of the outdoor condenser.
- The serial number encodes the manufacture date — that sets the warranty clock, whether or not you have paperwork.
- The manufacturer (or a licensed contractor with their dealer access) can confirm registration and remaining coverage from that number.
Why this is the most valuable second opinion you can get
The most expensive mistake we see is a homeowner paying out of pocket — or replacing an entire system — for a part the manufacturer would have covered, because another company told them the warranty had expired without checking. When we give a free second opinion, checking the warranty status is a standard step: we confirm what failed, look up the manufacturer coverage from the serial number, and tell you whether the part is covered before anyone spends money. We do not assume expiration, and we do not steer you toward a replacement you may not need.
Keep your coverage intact
Two things protect your warranty: registering the system when it is installed, and keeping up with maintenance, since most manufacturers require documented service. Our Family Comfort Plan keeps that record, and a lapsed system is worth a diagnostic before you assume the worst.
