How Long Does Ductwork Last in Florida?

How long residential ductwork lasts in Florida's heat and humidity, the signs it is failing, and when sealing or a redesign beats another cleaning.

Short answer: Flexible ductwork in a Florida attic typically lasts about 10 to 15 years before the joints and insulation break down; sheet-metal trunks last longer. Heat and humidity shorten that, so many homes need duct repair before the AC wears out.

Florida attics are hard on ductwork

Ductwork does not last as long here as the manufacturer's lab number suggests. A flexible duct run baking in a 120°F-plus Central Florida attic, cycling through daily humidity, tends to reach the end of its useful life in roughly ten to fifteen years — the plastic inner liner stiffens and cracks, the outer insulation sags, and the joints pull loose. Rigid sheet-metal trunks last longer, but their sealing tape and connections still fail over time.

Signs your ducts, not your AC, are the problem

  • Rooms that never match the thermostat, or a house that is dusty no matter how often you change the filter.
  • Energy bills climbing while the equipment is still relatively new.
  • Musty or attic smells when the system runs — a sign of leaks pulling in attic air, or moisture in the ducts.
  • Visible sagging, crushed, or disconnected duct when you look in the attic.

Cleaning, sealing, or redesign — which one you actually need

If the ducts are sound but dirty, duct cleaning is the fix. If they leak at the joints, sealing and repair restores the airflow you are paying for. But once the runs are cracked, undersized, or badly laid out — the common case past the ten-year mark — another cleaning is throwing money at a system that needs a replacement or a full redesign. As an operator guideline, duct systems over about twenty years old are usually better replaced than repaired.

Replace the ducts with the AC, or before

The best time to fix failing ductwork is when you replace the air conditioner, so the new, properly sized system is not fighting old leaks. If you are weighing that, start with repair or replace your AC and a free second opinion.
